What is the difference?
To help you choose the right model to fit your needs, budget, and property size, we have compared the different types of lawnmowers.
There were two choices when it came time to mow your lawn in the past decades:
a manual reel-type mower that required major muscle to push, or an earlier gas-powered model that could or might not start and often filled the yard full of black smoke.
Reel mowers can still be purchased, but they don’t offer the same convenience as upgraded machinery. Gas mowers of today are cleaner and more efficient than ever. However, electric mowers are gaining ground. While corded electric mowers have been around for more than 30 years, they still have a lot of loyal fans. However, battery-operated mowers are new to the electric lawn care market and are gaining popularity. We have compared the main types of lawnmowers, electric and gas. Keep reading for the good and bad to help you choose the right lawn care option for your yard.
Large lawns can be mowed by gas mowers.
A gas mower is a good choice if you have a large lawn (more than 14,000 sq. feet) and need to mow in one go. A corded electric mower will not run out of power but it is limited by the extension cord’s length (50 to 100ft). Electric mowers are best for smaller yards less than 1,500 square feet. A battery-powered mower can last 20 to 45 minutes depending on how tall the grass is and how thick the grass is. This will suit small to medium yards up to 14,000 sq. feet. However, a second battery can be purchased and charged to double the time it takes to mow.
Electric mowers that run on batteries are the most user-friendly.
Corded electric mowers weigh in at 35 to 55 pounds, making them the most lightweight. However, they are still very easy to push. It can be difficult to maneuver around trees or flowerbeds with the cord in your hands. A gas mower can be over 90 pounds. This can make it difficult for it to move up an inclined slope unless the mower is self-propelled. The front wheels pull the mower along. Although self-propulsion is great, it is not always easy to control the mower. You could accidentally mow over a flowerbed.
