BEST TIME FOR AERATING?
WHAT IS THE BEST TIME FOR YOUR LAWN TO BE AERATED?
No matter where you live or what kind of turfgrass your lawn is made of, aeration can make it healthier and more beautiful. It’s important to know when and how to aerate your lawn. Also, be aware of what equipment you should use. Aerating can help limit the potential for weeds to get a foothold in your lawn.
Josh Friell, Ph. Josh Friell, Ph.D., from The Toro Company’s Center for Advanced Turf Technology says that aeration causes temporary stress to the turf. The recovery time depends on the growing conditions and the annual growth cycles. When determining an annual plan for verification, it is important to consider these factors.
When is it the best time to aerate?
It is best to aerate just before or during high growth periods. But, it is not recommended to aerate lawn immediately before or during times of stress. You can heat or drought, for example. Your lawn’s type will determine when it is best to aerate.
When to Aerate If You Have Cool-Season Grain:If your work involves cool-season grasses like bluegrass and fescue (and ryegrass), it’s best to aerate during their growth periods in spring and autumn.
When to Aerate If You Have Warm-Season Grain Grasses: For warm-season grasses like Bermudagrass, St. Augustine, St. Augustine, and zoysiagrass you should aerate between late spring through early-autumn.
Spring Aerating Tips:
Wait until the lawn has been mowed a few more times before you begin aerating. This will ensure that the lawn grows quickly enough to take advantage of the increased air exchange and pore space at the root zone.
Friell warns that any disturbance to the root zone during spring can increase competition for weeds by bringing buried seeds to the surface. Applying fertilizer after aeration will reduce the risk of weed competition and increase grass hardiness. If you intend to overseed the lawn after aeration, don’t use a weedkiller. It will stop the seed from germinating.
Fall Aeration Tips:
Friell stated that it is important to aerate in the fall so that the turf can recover and be ready for winter dormancy.
How Often Should You Aerate Your Lawns? Friell stated that most lawns should be aerated at least once a year. Aeration may be beneficial for lawns with clay soil or compacted soil.
Don’t forget After Aerating Your Lawn
- Don’t forget to water after aeration. Friell stated that lawns should not need to be aerated if the turf is too wet or the dirt has enough moisture to make it muddy.
- After aeration, apply fertilizer and weedkiller. If you are going to oversee the process, however, don’t apply weed killer immediately after aeration.
- After aeration, overseed so that seeds can make the most of the disturbed surface. This improves seed-to-soil contact and encourages successful germination.
